Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing these medications should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
