Prison Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He contested the legal system and justice triumphed.

Sixty days following being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro now appears jail-bound.

Anticipated Jailing

The convicted coup-monger – who has been subject to residential detention in his estate while a series of judicial steps and petitions play out – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the coming days, amid increasing speculation that he will be sent to a infamous high-security prison.

Past Comments on Inmates

Throughout Bolsonaro’s long public life, the far-right ex- paratrooper showed scant sympathy for Brazil’s prison population.

“For what reason must we give those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They should just get fucked, end of story. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to end up in prison, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Jail Location Speculation

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, several of whom this week visited the facility in an obvious attempt to prevent the supreme court from banishing him there.

Izalci Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, claimed he expected the 70-year-old leader to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe digestive problems – the consequence of a almost deadly assault during the 2018 presidential political campaign – signified it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He will not be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It could be dreadful,” he added, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the standard of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells holding four dozen inmates: “That is practically one square metre per prisoner.

“We conversed to the inmates and they complain, naturally, of the awful cuisine,” added the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

The senator isn't the sole person expressing views prior to the former president’s predicted detention.

Authoring in a leading publication, one more backer, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to see “the largest wrong in its history”.

“It is an injustice that gnaws the spirits of millions Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed Public Opinion

It is possibly correct considering the considerable following Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. However his anticipated incarceration has also warmed the hearts of millions other people who feel he deserves to be incarcerated for plotting to block the incoming president from taking power – and also scheming to have him assassinated.

Congressman Otoni, a politician for the sitting administration's allied group, commented: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to get dignified treatment – but dignified handling in prison. He must not continue being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years praising the severe handling of prisoners, had unexpectedly become aware to their privileges. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has always asserted that basic rights are not for lawbreakers – decided to tour a prison to find out what situations are really like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, degrading conduct”.

Potential Jail Facilities

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now houses about 14,000 inmates, his expected location appears to be a adjacent jail for police officers and other “unique” prisoners known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

His potential cell are much more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although nevertheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the stunning official residence, approximately 20 kilometers away.

According to information, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha measures about 260 square feet – approximately the size of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 square meter bathroom with a shower and a 12 sq metre veranda. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a television and also a cooler in his cell as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” sources suggested.

Partisan Reactions

Senator Lucas condemned the speculated proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his future in the {
