Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight place.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Best Attribute Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to do what he usually does.
"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he said after the win at Manchester.
